Our Journey to The Long House
After a two-year search we finally found a place to call home that we've fondly named The Long House.
The Long House is nestled between Lugo and Vilalba in the beautiful region of Galicia, this place immediately captured our hearts.
We coined the name "The Long House" during our final house-viewing road trip. Each house on our list received a descriptor for easy reference, and this one, with its distinctive layout, became The Long House. It's essentially two houses joined together, which explains its impressive length.
The property comprises two sections: a white part, which we've dubbed The White House, and a stone part, naturally called The Stone House.
We moved straight into The White House, which, despite needing some renovation, is quite lovable and liveable. The Stone House, however, is another story. Its interior is a blank canvas, requiring a complete overhaul of floors, walls, and ceilings before it's habitable.
Our dream is to eventually settle into The Stone House and use The White House to welcome family and friends.
For now, the plan is to replace the floorboards and ceilings in The White House and then tackle the roof renovation. It’s a gradual process, but one we’re eager to embark on together.
This summer has been an absolute delight. The weather here in Galicia is a refreshing change from the sweltering heat of other parts of Spain. We've been able to enjoy the outdoors fully, with cool breezes flowing through our bedroom window in the evenings, eliminating the need for air-conditioning.
Living off-grid has its own charm too. Our property isn't connected to town water, but we have two wells providing us with all we need. We’ve also discovered some fruit trees on the land, and soon, we plan to get a few chickens for fresh eggs daily.
Finally having a place to call our own and putting down roots feels incredibly fulfilling. The Long House is more than just a home; it's the start of a new chapter, filled with promise and the joy of simple, grounded living.
